Colombia

Colombia is located at the northern tip of South America. Thanks to its closeness to rain-forests, the Andes mountains and diverse borders; its culture reflects the indigenous Indian, Spanish and African origins of its people.

Although there is no clear consensus on a typical Colombian dish, many would say that the Arepa is a reflection of the country's gastronomical tie with ingredients like rice, corn, potato and yucca.

Colombia's gastronomy is defined by regional and not national flavors. This means that similar dishes are done differently based on the region and hence there are many varieties. For example, an Arepa may be done with different ingredients and fillings based on the city where you're eating the Arepa. And, although it may taste different, it's still an Arepa.

Nevertheless, we at Eat Latin Chicago have listed the most popular dishes and plates from the country.

To Eat and Drink

  • Sancocho

  • Arepa

  • Bandeja Paisa

  • Tamal

  • Pastel de Yuca

  • Lulada

  • Fruit juices and sorbets

  • Gaseosas (Colombian sodas)

  • Colombian coffee

And, when eating some arepas or tamales, do pair it up with a lulada, passion fruit juice or raspberry sorbet. Drinks made out of fruits are the most popular.

Finally, finish your meal with a nice cup of traditional Colombian coffee and a guava sweet.

You won't regret it!

Restaurants

ANTOJITOS COLOMBIANOS

Antojitos Colombianos is a Colombian bakery-restaurant that can be found in Portage Park. It is a perfect place to get breakfast, or even get some typical Colombian bakery treats!

It features almost all of the typical Colombian dishes that we suggested along with sweets and coffee imported from Colombia.

Our guide recommends:

"Try the different arepas! The one filled with beef and cheese was my favorite one and the tamal was delicious as well. Also, don't be shy and get a passion fruit juice to go along your arepa! It will be worth it!" Diego
